John R. Sanderson
John R. Sanderson is the President, CEO, and founding member of Sanderson Wealth Management, LLC and Sanderson Wealth Management CPAs, LLC. John’s wide range of skills enables him to provide sophisticated financial and estate planning and investment consulting services to businesses, entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth individuals. A Certified Public Accountant, he has also earned the designation of Certified Investment Management Analyst.
John utilizes his extensive experience to integrate all aspects of a client’s financial portfolio, including existing assets, future assets, and inherited wealth, while also focusing on succession planning, income taxation, and estate taxation. John mentors and works well with Sanderson Wealth Management’s younger professionals, drawing on nearly 40 years of professional experience to guide them for the benefit of Sanderson’s valued clients. His specialty is comprehensive planning for high-level executives and business owners, and this often encompasses their entire families.
Prior to establishing Sanderson Wealth Management in July 2001, John had an exceptional 27-year career with Ernst & Young. He quickly rose through its ranks, and his achievements were recognized when he became a partner at the age of 33. John held various positions of leadership, and served as Area Office Managing Partner, was a member of the firm’s Board of Partners, a Director of Tax, and an Area Office Partner of Personal Financial Consulting. Throughout his extraordinary career at Ernst & Young, John handled all forms of taxation, provided advice to entrepreneurs, and oversaw numerous aspects of wealth management.
John’s professional associations are abundant. They include the Financial Planning Counselors of Western New York (Director), the New York State Board for Public Accountancy (Member), the Western New York Planned Giving Consortium (Director), the Estate Analysts of Western New York (President), the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Buffalo Chapter (President), and the Annual Institute on Taxation (Chair).
A summa cum laude graduate of Niagara University, John was honored in 2011 with an honorary doctoral degree in Commercial Science. NU has also presented John with the Outstanding Business Alumnus of the 1970s Award, the Dean’s Award for the College of Business Administration, the John T. Kennedy Award for accounting excellence, and the prestigious Dunleavy Award for his exceptional professional success, outstanding charitable service, and consistent loyalty to his alma mater. John showed his appreciation for NU by serving as a Trustee for many years, and he currently is a member of its Investment and Finance Committee. John feels a particular affinity for his alma mater and attributes much of his success to it.
A lifelong resident of Western New York, John is extremely active in the community and dedicated to several not-for-profit organizations. He is a past Treasurer and Director of the Greater Buffalo Partnership, and currently serves as President and Director of the Zoological Society of Buffalo Foundation, Inc., Director and member of the Executive Committee of the Zoological Society of Buffalo, Inc., and Director and Treasurer of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. In 2009, John and his wife Karen were honored by the Western New York Chapter of Fundraising Professionals when they were selected to receive the organization’s Outstanding Philanthropists award.
